Recently the line within sofa beds and futons has blurred with hybrid models named 'convertible' sofa beds. This 'convertible' sofa bed can be called a futon, because the same pillow is used for sofas and couches, like futons. However, they are fully layered and look like 'traditional' sofa beds.
A futon, on the other hand, uses the same pillow as a sofa or as a bed. The mattress looks different from the couch because it's not fully layered, and some models don't have armrests. Traditional western futon frames own wood or metal supporting structures that are visible and not covered with upholstery. In a sitting position, the back of the mattress is folded. To turn the futon into a bed, users press the end of the futon. This flattens the mattress, and the pillow becomes a mattress.
There may be a lot of confusion about the difference between 'traditional' sofa beds and futons and in many cases, sellers use these terms interchangeably. The main difference is that the mattress for the sofa bed is hidden under the frame when used as a sofa and has a separate seat cushion. Mattresses for mattresses, on the other hand, are used as cushion seats and mattresses. When in the form of a sofa, the sofa bed looks and feels similar a 'traditional' sofa.
