Figure out how the sofa will be oriented. Perhaps this should be the first step when choosing a sofa. Decide where the sofa will be placed so you know what to look for. If you usually enjoy sitting in front of the TV then that's where you should place the sofa. But perhaps you enjoy entertaining guests and chatting with them in which case you should create a cozy lounge area in front of the fireplace or facing the bar. Be careful however because placing a sofa parallel to the fireplace in a long and narrow room can make the room even narrower.
So it is possible to combine formal and contemporary, you just need to use your imagination. Once you have you are couch, you can finish decorating your living room by finding pieces that match. A table with family photos or a fresh cut flowers will go with either formal or informal decor. A hutch for treasured knick knacks will also go well. Art work or a mirror for your walls. But it all starts with your sofa. Once you pick out the one that is right for you, everything else will fall into place.
Does the upholsterer a mile away have a thousand fabrics at his or her disposal to offer to you? Probably not, but web retail stores do because they can work directly with many large and small fabric manufacturers to bring you 1000 fabric choices every day in simple prints, twill fabrics, complex and elegant designs, and intricately woven fabrics. Upholstery fabrics comprise about 25% to 40% of the offerings, in a variety of price categories.
