Sectional Sofa History. The sectional sofa certainly rose to fame in the mid-20th century, but this innovative piece has a more complicated past—one that has been a point of contention between antique furniture experts and historians. Before built-in cup holders and powered recliners, sectional sofas solved other problems for homeowners in the early 1800s, dating back to before the Civil War in America. Only a few examples remain intact, concentrated in an area of Virginia fed by the Rappahannock River, and known to be an area of wealth, which allowed residents to hire craftsmen for more custom projects. An example dated 1820 exists in Fredericksburg, Va, and comprises three sections with metal latches underneath.
Sectional sofas are great for a lot of reasons. When you have a sectional sofa in your home, you have room to seat a lot of people. More room to seat people means more entertaining and dinner parties. However, there are more great things about sectionals, so read on to find out more.
The majority of sectionals can be arranged into several configurations, including L-shapes, semi-circles and horseshoe shapes. This enables you to change your configuration to suit your needs - and also your moods. You can easily change the furniture around and move it to suit the needs of visitors.
Sectional sofas may also be separated with sections scattered around the room. Not all sofa sectionals are made to separate the sections with ease and it is always best to check out this possibility prior to purchase.
When room length is a concern, you may consider a sofa sectional set. This may be two or more sections in two or three configurations such as an end and a recliner. A beverage section, rocker/recliner and an end section, two simple sections and other similar arrangements. These sections may be placed where you have the greatest need for them.
Another point, which you have to consider while purchasing your sofa, is the transportation of sofa to your house. You should be able to carry the sofa up your staircase and through the doors. If you do not consider this, then the whole exercise would become futile, if you face any problem in transporting it and placing it in your living room. These sofas that are packed in sections and small units would work well in cases where the staircase or the doors are small. So now you know what all you have to look for when going to buy a modern sectional sofa for your living room
Extra Living Room Space. Because you can use sectionals to fill in corner spaces, and to run around awkward pillars and so on, you can arrange your living room furniture to make best use of the available space. This in turn offers you two options: either enjoy the extra space and extra room you suddenly have, or fit in more furniture so you can accommodate more people.
