The daybed was the most popular and common kind of sofa in the 17th century. Especially into the 19th century the sofa, couch, or lounge bed was often thought of as a ladies lounging seat. However, reverting back further in history, men would often lounge as they ate or relaxed, and the women would stand or sit in chairs. As a matter of fact, it was not until the industrial era that sofas began to appear eventually in the homes of more and more common people. Soon it became so that virtually everyone, singles, couples, and / or whole families, would acquire at least one sofa for their home.
To avoid this, measure your room and the relevant doorways and draw up a scale plan, including major items of furniture. Use the plan to determine what size and configuration of chairs and sofas best suits the room. Consider the proportions of the room in relation to the height and depth of the sofa. There is a lot of variation in the height of different sofas according to their style, and if the ceilings are low, a high-backed sofa may dwarf the space just as much as a sofa that is too large.
Figure out how the sofa will be oriented. Perhaps this should be the first step when choosing a sofa. Decide where the sofa will be placed so you know what to look for. If you usually enjoy sitting in front of the TV then that's where you should place the sofa. But perhaps you enjoy entertaining guests and chatting with them in which case you should create a cozy lounge area in front of the fireplace or facing the bar. Be careful however because placing a sofa parallel to the fireplace in a long and narrow room can make the room even narrower.
