Find the right upholstery material. It's important to determine your priorities when selecting the upholstery material for a sofa. For example, if you want the living room to look elegant and classy, you can get a leather sofa. Fabric is considered more casual. The most durable fabric options include cotton, linen and synthetic microfiber. If you have pets or small kids, stay away from materials that stain easily or are difficult to maintain.
If you are looking for a more formal feeling for your living room, the standard three person sofa is one way to go. These sofas typically have a more traditional look to them. However, you can still have the seating capacity of a sectional. Pair your sofa up with a loveseat or a second sofa. Depending on how formal you want your living room, you may not have a television. But if you have a fireplace, you want your main sofa facing it. Arrange your loveseat or second sofa off to its side moving towards the fireplace. If you do not have a fireplace, you have the opportunity to design the perfect area for friends and family to gather and catch up with each other. Placing your two sofas directly opposite each other crates a nice warm gathering spot. For some, however, this may seem a little stuffy and old fashioned. If so, you can place a second sofa running diagonally on one side and other chairs or loveseat on the other side running diagonally as well. Do this so you create a triangle instead of a square, with your sofa table in the middle. This way, you can get a formal look yet contemporary feel at the same time.
Figure out how the sofa will be oriented. Perhaps this should be the first step when choosing a sofa. Decide where the sofa will be placed so you know what to look for. If you usually enjoy sitting in front of the TV then that's where you should place the sofa. But perhaps you enjoy entertaining guests and chatting with them in which case you should create a cozy lounge area in front of the fireplace or facing the bar. Be careful however because placing a sofa parallel to the fireplace in a long and narrow room can make the room even narrower.
Check the frame. This is an extra tip that will help you get a sofa that's durable and well built. Check the frame to make sure it's sturdy. Lift up one of the front legs and see if the other one lifts as well. If it's still touching the ground then the frame is weak.
Sofas and psychologists have been associated with each other for some time. Although not all psychologists will instruct his or her client to lie down for sessions, the idea hinges on many Freudian psychoanalysis theories -therefore, is used often by doctors that adhere to such notions. Lying down as a therapist or psychoanalyst of some kind may be an important aspect of his or her method for interpreting dreams. It has been theorized that stream of consciousness is much easier for the client to voice when in a calming, physical position. It is the concept that the relaxation provided by reclining in such a way, as well as not looking the doctor or healer in the face -helps the individual open up or speak more freely: a logical idea.
Couch Transportation. Do not plan to purchase any heavy item that requires a transportation vehicle without making arrangement for it in advance. It is wrong to keep a seller waiting for you to arrive to take the object away for days together just because you do not have a plan.
Check if the couch is covered. Some sellers buy a good cover or new cushions to hide the defects of their old couch. Do not fall for such ploys. Check the couch first.
